>City councillor for international/regional cooperation > Extracts The city of Subotica has a budget for culture of 11%, much higher than other cities in Europe. It is part of the network of European Intercultural Cities since 2009 and has been selected for the next two years till 2012. One of the difficulties faced by the city is that many projects of national communities are implemented in parallel without any joint working. Thus, she defines her mission as "to build the bridges between these projects". When talking about the intercultural aspect of the city, two festivals are especially meaningful : Interetno and Duzijanca (harvest). The war in the 90's changed the structure of national communities in Subotica. For the newcomers, there is both a need to teach them how to live in an intercultural city as well as to remember how it was before. She is making a special effort on communicating with the minority still willing to develop seperately from the rest of the community. 'Intercultural communication is very very important". |
